  • Foggy conditions along the Appalachian Trail (Franconia Ridge Trail) in the New Hampshire White Mountains during the autumn months. The wall seen here is referred to as a Scree wall. These walls are built on the edge of trails to discourage hikers from going off trail. And building these small walls helps protect the fragile alpine habitat.

  • Trail blazing along the Mt Tecumseh Trail in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. A proper blaze is a two by six inch rectangle. Spills and runs should be wiped away when applied and once dried, runs can be removed using proper techniques. After a trail inspection by Forest Service in June 2012, using proper protocol, they removed the bottom blaze (bad blazing) because it was placed about two feet from the ground on the tree. In time, the bad blazing will fade away and not be visible.

  • The Thoreau Falls Trail bridge, which crosses the East Branch of the Pemigewasset River, in the Pemigewasset Wilderness on October 31, 2017. On October 29-30 a storm consisting of heavy rain and strong winds caused extensive damage throughout New Hampshire. The East Branch of the Pemi River flooded around the Thoreau Falls Trail bridge, but the bridge looks to have been untouched. This bridge has a tilt to it that is visible in the photograph. Update: the bridge seen in this photograph is no longer standing, and hikers now have to ford this water crossing.
