Designed by Salem architect Samuel McIntire, the building of this house began in 1780, but it was never completed; Benjamin Hawkes would purchase and complete the building of it around 1800. This 18th-century house is part of the Salem Maritime National Historic Site, which was the first national historic site in the National Park System.
