This stove piece is considered to be a protected artifact, and the removal of historic artifacts from federal lands without a permit is a violation of federal law; and artifacts should be left undisturbed, not put on display like this. This is how the artifact was found.

From 1874-1921 a railroad traveled through this area; the railroad was first used by the Gale River Railroad. This logging railroad was in operation from 1874-1878, and it ended at the Gale River Settlement. The Profile & Franconia Notch Railroad would then take over the line and extend it to the Profile House in Franconia Notch. In operation from 1879-1921, this passenger railroad only serviced the Profile House.
