The Franconia Brook Trail follows the old railroad bed of the East Branch & Lincoln Railroad (1893-1948). In 2011 high waters from Tropical Storm Irene caused most of the stone abutment to collapse (right side).

Originally, the Franconia Brook Campsite was along the Lincoln Woods Trail, but in 1997 it was permanently closed due to unacceptable sanitary conditions; it was relocated to the east side of the East Branch of the Pemigewasset River, along the Eastside Trail.
