  • Old beat up looking birch tree at Thornton Gore in Thornton, New Hampshire. This was an old hill farm community that was abandoned during the 19th century. This area was also logged during the Woodstock & Thornton Gore Railroad era (1909 - 1914).

This bridge crosses the East Branch of the Pemigewasset River, and it has a noticeable tilt. Update: the bridge seen in this photograph is no longer standing, and hikers now have to ford this water crossing.

Mount Madison, the northernmost peak in the Presidential Range, is in the background. Originally built in 1888, this is how Madison Spring Hut looked in 2010 before it was renovated in the fall and spring months of 2010-2011.

  • Southern Presidential Range from the Jewell Trail in Thompson and Meserve's Purchase in the New Hampshire White Mountains on a cloudy day. The Jewell Trail is named for Sergeant Winfield S. Jewell. He was an Army Signal Corps observer on Mount Washington from 1878-1880. And on April 12, 1884, while on the Greely expedition to the Arctic, Jewell died of starvation. Out of the 25 men on the three year Greeley expedition (1881–1884), only six survived.
