New England weather can be unpredictable, and New Hampshire’s Mount Washington is home to some of the worst weather in the world.   • The East Branch of the Pemigewasset River in Lincoln, New Hampshire USA after hours of heavy rains and strong winds from Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Hurricane Sandy caused massive destruction along the east coast. This bridge at the entrance to Loon Mountain Ski Area was damaged during Tropical Storm Irene in 2011.

  • Looking up a landslide on the side of the Hancock Mountain Range in the Pemigewasset Wilderness in Lincoln, New Hampshire in November 2011. Heavy rains from Tropical Storm Irene in 2011 caused an old landslide that was in the process of being natural regenerated to slide again. The natural process of regeneration must start all over. The new landslide looks to follow the track of the old one. This storm caused extensive damage along the East Coast of the United States and the White Mountains, New Hampshire.

This image shows how the East Branch of the Pemigewasset River in Lincoln, New Hampshire looked on August 28, 2011. Loon's South Mountain bridge can be seen downstream. This tropical storm caused destruction along the East Coast of the United States and the White Mountain National Forest of New Hampshire was officially closed during the storm.

Diamond Dust is a cloud composed of tiny ice crystals that forms near the ground. And this weather phenomenon usually happens under clear skies and during very cold temperatures.

  • This photo from 2012 shows a section of the Eastside Road / Trail in Lincoln, New Hampshire that was washed out during Tropical Storm Irene. In 2011, the Eastside Road / Trail in was severely damaged by Tropical Storm Irene. Culverts were washed away and sections of the road suffered erosion damage that prevents Forest Service vehicles from traveling to the Franconia Brook Tentsite from the Lincoln Woods Trailhead. This storm damage had been fixed.

This is how the ramp to the bridge looked just days after Irene. Update: the bridge seen in this photograph is no longer standing, and hikers now have to ford this water crossing.

High waters from Irene caused peeling to the bottom of the two logs that support the bridge. It crosses the East Branch of the Pemigewasset River in the Pemigewasset Wilderness of New Hampshire. Tropical Storm Irene caused heavy destruction to the White Mountains Trail System. Update: the bridge seen in this photograph is no longer standing, and hikers now have to ford this water crossing.
