At 45,000-acres, the Pemigewasset Wilderness in New Hampshire is the largest of the six designated wilderness areas in the White Mountain National Forest. From 1893-1948, the East Branch & Lincoln Railroad heavily logged this wilderness. Designated wilderness areas are governed under the National Wilderness Preservation System and the Wilderness Act of 1964. They have the highest level of protection for federal lands.
