Abandoned Railroad Beds

Documentary photos of 20th century railroad beds in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. These photos showcase how the actual railroad beds look today. Some have been used in a positive manner and are part of the White Mountains trail system, while others have been abandoned. All photos are available for usage in print publications and projects.

  • Zealand Notch - Scenic view from along the Appalachian Trail (Ethan Pond Trail) in the New Hampshire White Mountains during the summer months. This trail utilizes parts of the old railroad bed of the Zealand Valley Railroad (1886-1897).

  • Pemigewasset Wilderness - Remnants of the East Branch & Lincoln Railroad bed in the area of Stillwater Junction in Lincoln, New Hampshire. This section of railroad led to Camp 19. The EB&L was a logging railroad in operation from 1893-1948.

  • Old railroad bed in Bethlehem, New Hampshire during the spring months. This railroad bed was first used by the Gale River Railroad from 1874 to 1878, which was a logging railroad. It was then used by the Profile & Franconia Notch Railroad, which was in operation from 1879-1921, and only serviced the Profile House in Franconia Notch.

This trail utilizes parts of the old East Branch & Lincoln Railroad (1893-1948) bed. And straight ahead was the start of the railroad trestle that crossed the East Branch of the Pemi.
